People, you know, in other countries where his true name and the family called Mr and Mrs and the like are usually quite shocked when they look at the Icelandic telephone book.

The Icelandic telephone directory lists the name of the first. Then comes your last name, address, and your job is [to have the necessary lead to the other Jon Jonsson, what else?] And finally, your telephone number [s].

Each of them is on their first seriesName in the address book, because here in Iceland we call everyone by first name. We do not make Mr. or Mrs. even when we are not children. Your teacher is Gunna. The father of your friend Jon. The president is Oli. Your Prime Minister Geir. Your friendly local pop star Björk. And so on.

In addition to the bases funny name, we are working on a system of family name, which means that you take your father's name and simply add the suffix-son [if you're a guy] or learned [ifsix] a girl. Björk Gudmundsdóttir is the daughter of Gudmund. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson is the son of Grimur. And so on.

That means we have a few names in circulation that have infiltrated the culture over the centuries, for various reasons. Names like Laxness, Gudjohnsen, Pedersen, Clausen, Mathiesen ... come to think of it, so sen. Thanks to our Danish colonial masters, no doubt.

Our phone book contains a wealth of useful information, such aswell. Besides the normal things like emergency numbers and so on, we also have useful information on things like the highest mountains and waterfalls in the world [where your next vacation around the floor], the longest rivers in Iceland [for river rafting opportunities that] the solar system [YOU ARE HERE] and all the national flags in the world [well, if you accidentally end up, for example, about Iraq]. Not to be extremely useful information on what to talkin case of natural disasters: volcanic eruptions [put a helmet] hurricanes [cover provided is safe] floods [delete discovery sewer], landslides in the left side of the house [,] most of the mountain station, avalanches [ditto] and earthquakes [diving under the nearest table].

Seriously, you could spend hours reading the book Icelandic phone. It 'very funny and totally rocks.
