A culture of discipline

A "culture of discipline" is a phrase used by Jim Collins (Good to Great) in his study of large companies. All large companies, others have far exceeded those with a culture of discipline. This does not mean that they spend their time to discipline people. If you have a culture of discipline, people rarely have the discipline.

A culture of discipline is not about punishing people, but it is control. This is to control themselves.Disciplined thinking leads to disciplinary action. All dimensions, both in athletics, music, art, economics, leadership, healing arts and sciences, education or sales is the result of a discipline.

If we speak of an individual or an organization, everything begins with the question: "Who are you and what is your goal?" Their goal is to find the passion at the intersection of what you are and what you are good. When we talk about our objective and clearType of person and / or organization that we are, then we need to discipline our thinking in order to achieve these objectives. Thoughts and behaviors that contribute to the goal then nurtured and expanded.

Most people and most organizations are undisciplined. We have thoughts in my head that, contrary to our goal. We leave the behavior in ourselves and others that should not be tolerated. In a culture of discipline that we are who we are and where we go clear. We apply ourContradictions, to be honest, first in ourselves, and then another, and fix it.

A year ago I wrote in this newsletter on two very different companies, one that has a culture of discipline and who is not. The student's books and music, a library and a cafe is my example of a culture of discipline. On one of the shops I often see the manager on the ground. Every time a customer approached him, he drops everything and serve the customer. I always getcheerful and courteous service when I go there.

A chain of restaurants that I visited, called Steak and Shake, not a culture of discipline. I went to take to take to, and could not get served or even acknowledged. I wrote to the headquarters of the Steak and Shake and received a cursory response.

The difference between these two companies is that when people think of students in a certain way and act in accordance with the main idea. I am concerned about the assessmentCustomers and provide excellent service. A Steak and Shake, people are alone. They have learned to think and act in accordance with the purposes of the organization. You can also get lucky and good service or not. A Schuler is not happiness, is consistent great service is rooted in a culture of discipline. Embedded in this culture is a deep love for reading and for the community, which is evident in its consistently high service.

I worked with aOrganization in which senior executives love their job and worked very hard. They saw themselves as disciplined. However, they were very undisciplined. The leaders of this organization were each on their own. Some of them have been identified, although aloof and moody. Avoid all other parties to the conflict and said "yes" to everything. Another was to fly pop out of his skin when he felt threatened known. All these leaders were people of talent. Discipline is about the ideas andConsistent with the purposes and objectives Behavior. E 'holding themselves accountable, if they are not compatible. Much of the talent and hard work of these leaders was taken away, why not think and act in accordance with the objectives and values.

In a culture of discipline that we live in harmony regardless of our purpose and in line with our values of what is happening in the world. A culture of discipline to respond to any event. A non --cultural knee-jerk reactions covered on both crises and opportunities. This is because the motivation in these cultures is not subject to fear. In a culture of discipline, are motivated by love - love for your purpose, love for those who serve, and love for your values. Live on out. This makes you more stable, they are responding to what is happening around you.

If the occasion, you should not attack. On second thought. Letter"This on my / our purpose? E 'this something that I / we are prepared to do? Can I / we are passionate about this?" We would also like to know if it contributes to long-term viability.

When the crisis, the response is consistent with the objectives and values in line. Shortcuts! Collins wrote Good to Great, that companies that protrude from their values tend to be more successful. The key, he found, was not in what the values that have elected them, but they stick by their values, what they were.

In a culture of discipline that we make a commitment to our goals and values. We refuse to allow the behavior that is out of this picture. Persons who violate the purposes and values, the ability to learn and change. If they wish, they leave. A culture of discipline is not an authoritarian regime, in which a person is the executor. These organizations tend to fall apart when the dictator leaves. Culture requires disciplinePeople follow a uniform system in which freedom and responsibility. In a culture of discipline that we all help each other stay on track remind each other through a continuous feedback and be a model.

If you want to see if your organization has a culture of discipline, you hear the stories that are told to. Are stories of achievement and recognition of the efforts of the people? Or are colored with stories of negativity and criticism? DoPeople tend to credit for work well done, or who have mainly about what "I spoke" to be generous? Fear-based and self-centered stories are ultimately demoralize and feed negativity. Stories of people go out of their way to help people and stories in which the loans to third parties constantly reinforce the goals, values and attitudes that the organization is best characterized. We regulate our mind away from negative thoughts and victims and to freedom of thoughtAppreciation, understanding, problem solving and the possibility in every situation to be found.

I must admit that I often rebelled against the discipline. I thought it would cramp my style or limit my freedom. What I learned is that the discipline that is run by a dictatorial person spasms of all types and limit freedom. Guidelines approved by each individual does the opposite. Self-discipline allows us to achieve excellence.

Discipline that comes from the fact that a commitmentaround a common goal of a structure that creates a texture that people make wise decisions to help. The reluctance to accept the bad behavior that is reassuring. Officials see the leaders to think and behave consistently inspired, and act in accordance with the objectives and values. Rules in a thorough, are not necessary if the people who are already motivated.

If you run a business or just yourself, the discipline determines much of your success. Every day examine your thinking, your behavior, and your decisions. Ask: "This fits with my purpose?" This is a true reflection of who I am? " This with the purpose of my organization and values? "Learning" no ", they say, thoughts and behaviors that are not close with the purposes and values. Saying" Yes "to thoughts and behaviors that keep your goals. Think and then do the right things are consistent with the intent to keep you and run towards greatness.

Connect the dots. Use this information to your workplace, your church orspiritual community. Your family, neighborhood, your sports team. There is a common goal, your dedication and passion that inspires you? There are values that you live? Value and serve one another to achieve their common goal? How can a culture of discipline, not a teacher? How to work with others to create an environment where people are clear and provide for selfish reasons?
