The Usborne Book of Peoples of the World: Internet Linked (World Cultures)

The Usborne Book of Peoples of the World: Internet Linked (World Cultures) Review

This book is a great way to introduce the world to kids. I'm not a teacher, but I'd guess it's at about a third grade reading level. The text is broken up with brightly colored pictures, so the book does not look intimidating even to a younger child. There is one map per continent, which shows climate, political boundaries, and landmarks (like major rivers and cities).

I've not followed many of the internet links yet, but I do plan to.

The most valuable parts of the book are the first two sections "What are People" and "People and Culture". These are incredibly difficult issues to address with an early elementary school student, and I feel the book does a great job. The other information in book would be possible to find elsewhere (although I doubt it would presented so beautifully), but I've found no other resource that attempts to address "What are People" at this level. The origin of humanity is not mentioned, although the word species is used, and the book states that people "belong to a group of animals called primates, which includes apes and monkeys". The wording allows for a pretty easy jump into either evolution or creationism if you want to go there, but doesn't leave you feeling like they forgot something if you just skip it all together.

Peoples of the World has the parts you'd expect from an academic work: table of contents, index, acknowledgments, even a couple of footnotes that refer you to other pages in the book. Each picture has a caption.

Another plus for the book is that if focuses on the mission of introducing young children to the beauty and diversity of the world. It does not delve into the conflicts or the horrors of the past, nor does it take sides. It avoids controversial subjects simply by stating facts. "Israel is a Jewish state which was created in 1948. Many Arabs claim that Israel's land belongs to an Arabic people, the Palestinians." is a good example of how the book gives an opening if you wish to discuss the matter, but doesn't actually go into it. It handles slavery the same way, stating when and where and who, but not delving into the subject.

I recommend this book for elementary school children. It's not overwhelming for younger children, and contains lots of starting points for older children.

The comic book revolution in today's modern pop culture is more or less unheralded. Although a major coup in the world of Geekdom the mainstream press has regarded the increase in mass-market comic entertainment as nothing more than a fad.

The California Pop-Up Book

เขียนโดย Eva | 03:41

The California Pop-Up Book Review

The book looks like it might just be a decorative coffee table item, but the content belies that impression. The pop-ups are fun and attractive, but the real story is in the choice of objects and the writing. The selections speak to the myth of California that was consciously created by early explorers, developers, and movie moguls but became its own reality as people migrated to the state ready to play the roles the myth-makers created for them. In exposing the history through objects and some remarkable writing by such as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Carolyn See, Graham Nash, Alice Waters, Terry Gilliam, and Richard Rodriguez, the pre-mythic history and the development of a true California culture emerges...one in which the tinsel is a little tarnished around the edges, but glows as brightly as ever with its own special light.

The California Pop-Up Book Feature

Nine Strategies For Building an Exceptional Culture

เขียนโดย Eva | 03:17

Recently, I experienced a service for all aspects when I left some clothes in a hotel in New York visiting my family. Although I, as within two hours checking out of the hotel, I was told that the clothing could not be found. A few days later, when I spoke with General Manager of the hotel and asked if he was with the housekeeper, he said it was no longer there. "We were stealing from our guests," said the CEO. Huh. As a general manager would be, what have youdone in this situation? This manager cited the hotel company policy, said: "We are not responsible for items left in our hotel." Who wants to hear? Needless to say, the hotel lost a customer.

Unfortunately, a negative customer experience is more the norm than the exception in many companies. To stay on the market, you can not just good customer service, you have exceptional customer service. As author Jim Collins says: "Good is the enemy of great." Studiesshow that the corporate culture of the organization has a lot of what kind of service that you received your customers.

This article emphasizes Zappos, a company with one of the best corporate cultures in the world. I hope you win a couple of ideas to enrich your corporate culture from the practices of Zappos.

Zappos is an online shoe retailer, whose task is to provide the best customer service. They call this their "wow" philosophy, and it goes onthe customer. Zappos was as subscribe to one of the best corporate cultures in the world. Feed, Tony Hsieh, believes recognized when you'll make it to the culture, most of the other things like providing outstanding customer service offering that happen naturally on its own. In less than ten years the company has grown from no sales to $ 1 billion in gross sales. The number one driver of this growth has been by regular customers and word of mouth. What can you learn from a company that pays offWages below the market rate? How do they create such an exceptional culture?

Here are a few of the things that make Zappos culture is unique:

Management ensures that everyone understands the vision synonymous with Zappos with the best customer service. The company has ten core values that all employees know and believe. This is not just rhetoric. Videos of people bring the main values of life can be found on YouTube, and also published ZapposCulture is a book that has over 450 pages of ideas about the workers' culture.

Go beyond. For example, if a customer is looking for a particular shoe, and Zappos is sold out, looking for workers competitor locations and directs the customers to competitors. They lose the sale, but to gain customer loyalty.

Zappos is committed to cultural fit. When the interview, they look for people who are about customer service, are not passionatenecessarily about shoes. Hsieh himself admits that only have ten pairs of shoes. Zappos does not hire for skills alone.

Employees to use social media to build relationships with colleagues and staff. Zappos About 400 employees are on Twitter, and the company encourages them to build up customers and employees. Most employees' contributions are not even on the deal.

They practice what they preach. "Create fun and a little Weirdness" and "Deliver Wow Service" onlyTwo of the ten most important values. Zappos has employees who do not practice the core values not released, even if they do their work function. In fact, the core values of 50% of the performance evaluation.

Call center statistics are not measured. Employees are encouraged to be the relationships with the customers and not to those from the phone. There are no scripts. Employees have to take the power to make decisions. A call center representatives a customer sent flowers after she mentionedjust found out she had cancer. Every call center employee is expected, a dozen personal notes to customers to send one days.

All new employees, executives from the bottom, go through five weeks of training, which also calls for the answering customer questions and learning the shipping company plant.

You pay for new employees to quit. At the end of the orientation course program offered to new employees $ 2,000 plus training costs to terminate. Zappos wants to ensure that those whoremain bound with all their hearts to the company.

Agencies are required to spend 10 percent to 20 percent of their time, hang around with the people they manage. Agencies are invited to hang with the staff outside the office.

Think about your corporate culture for a moment. Where you can build more enthusiasm and loyalty? Take now have an obligation to manage the conversation to the table. A corporate culture that hasintroduced and maintained. Start today and watch your business grow From Good to Great.

No matter what our title, we make a difference ... can make a big difference. Here are our five most important things an individual can do to make a better job.

You may have talked about the cultural values at a meeting of the planning, but they have been given can be lost in a 3-inch-planning book. If your questions drawn a blank stare, trying to ask, what would protect the important cultural values of the company. As the owners / employees for the company would have described?

2. To take action. It's great to know the three cultural values ... but to strengthen them byAction.

Learning is that once the cultural values are clear - so what? This is where employees play a major role in the cultural transformation. Are the measures to promote the culture, the most important values, or ignore them? Be honest with your self-evaluation, and ask what else you can do.

Take the example that the corporate culture is desired, proactive solutions / dedicated employees happened, what if you sit on a possible solution, or resting during the brainstorming session or worsecomplaining about how it will not work after the meeting - you have not given it your best. They have not adjusted their movement toward supporting function for the core of the culture.

3. To change the culture of breakers ... to use your time Elegant Courage.

Learning is: What have happened if you personally agree, and you feel good? The process can be slow, but you are there others sabotage of culture. Your choice is to ignore or deal with elegant courage. Ignore supportedTheir staff is sabotaging behavior. Act with courage and elegant finish dedicate sabato from the discounting of the culture.

Next time, try it to your ear, how stupid bend; waste of time, is to concentrate the culture ... trying to say ... That's interesting, I am changing to support the focus / I feel it is exactly what needs to do our team / company. I'm surprised you feel like you do. I believe that cultural values are the key to our success.

4. Intensification ask your views --You yourself, what more can be adapted or improved?

Learning: The growth comes in small bursts - about pushing your comfort level. Enhance your confidence and impact. Look for more space and opportunities for the support of cultural values.

5. As a follower ... Ideas to bring ... support act with the right attitude ... corporate culture characteristics. It is your workplace, protection of cultural values.

Learning: The impact of dedicated employees is the resultimproved results. A workplace culture that values people and commitment to the bottom line can be identified.

It has become clear that our global culture emphasizes too much masculine energy, without regard to the feminine energies that a necessary balance is established. Maintaining Culture Integrity After A Merger Or Aquisition

เขียนโดย Eva | 14:45

For over 25 years I worked with organizations that have worked for a merger or acquisition experience. It's amazing how seamlessly these organizations, new signs, placed on all buildings, streamlining paperwork, print new brochures with the new company name and logo, and successfully with any number of similar routine administrative functions.

However, it is a mystery to me why so many companies are not such a bad job of mixing the cultures of the two organizations into aeffective, focused, and successful new corporate company with a clear direction, culture and personality.

Why is this so?

1. Management is too much with the financial and administrative tasks that they have no time or energy left to better address the human factors.

2. Management does not, filled the impact on the morale, safety, relationships, and the productivity of a culture of insecurity, stress and change.

3. Management does not have the empathy orSensitivity to the effects on the human relationships of the new culture and delegates those decisions / actions to the HR department, or anyone, if there is no HR department.

4. Management tried to cultivate the new culture does not legislate to make it in time.

5. Management does not know what it will look like the new culture and therefore plays' Let's wait and see. "

6. Management has the contact with the reality of what is really going on in theTrenches of the organization and relies on the "direct reports" about their awareness and / or understand what really is going on as a bottom-up review of their reality check.

Ago I worked with a client a few years, that went through a merger - acquisition. After four years, two different cultures were still in the organization. I heard again and again: if I do ___, we never had this problem. And by the employees of the acquired company, there was still aDispute about who bought whom.

I will tell you that in those years of uncertainty, lack of focus and clear direction of this organization, loss of business, sales, and good people, until they
decided to spend so much time and money in their human resources, as it has its pressures.

Management offering for the week: Mere precedent is a dangerous source of authority. Andrew Jackson

Learn More About the History of the Basque - Audio Book Review

เขียนโดย Eva | 02:30

The Basques and their culture is something of a mystery to most of the world, it is one of the most fascinating people in the world, with strong values and sense of community. It is a noble culture of integrity and loyalty to his own.

These great people have no real nation, but they have a strong sense of nationalism, all the same. They are experts in capitalism, commerce, negotiation, construction, agriculture and stern well, almost everything. I'd really like to seeIt would make time in your day this month to find out more, I may so bold, a very good audio book to recommend to you be?

"The Basque History of the World" (audiobook) Mark Krowanski, Recorded Books (1999)

This audio book is 12:50 minutes, including the author's interview at the end. They will be some of their sayings, wisdom and philosophy, as in surprise: "That which exists has a name" and "The house of my father will live." The Basques have theEurope's oldest living language, so probably live to the oldest European culture. In fact, their language, perhaps the oldest living language in the world too.

There are unlimited number of theories about the origins of man and language, no one really knows, many rumors and it is said that even the Basques do not know how they never really studied their history on the road. They were never conquered, but to live in peace without land. They are used by lawfascinated with their culture, history and incredible strength of character I am.

Japan (Teach Yourself World Cultures) (Japanese Edition) Review

Japan (Teach Yourself World Cultures) (Japanese Edition) Feature

Japan (Teach Yourself World Cultures) (Japanese Edition) Overview

How did Japanese industries become so successful? What was a samurai? When do Japanese people wear kimono? Do the Japanese celebrate Christmas? This book answers these questions, and many more, in a concise and lively overview of Japan: the country, its language, its people, their way of life and culture and what makes them tick. If you are studying for examinations which require a knowledge of the background of Japan and its civilisation, or if you are learning the language in, for example, an evening class and want to know more about the country, this is the book for you. If your job involves travel and business relations, it will provide valuable and practical information about the ways and customs of the people you are working with. Or if you simply have an interest in Japan for whatever reason, it will broaden your knowledge about the country and its inhabitants. The book is divided into three sections. Chapters One and Two deal with the forces -- historical, geographical, geological, demographical and linguistic -- that have brought about the formation of the country we know as Japan and the language we know as Japanese.Chapters Three to Seven deal with the wealth of creative aspects of Japanese culture from the beginnings to the present day. These chapters take a look at the main areas or works of literature, art and architecture, music, traditions and festivals, science and technology, fashion, and food and drink, together with the people who have created and are still creating them. Chapters Eight to Eleven deal with aspects of contemporary Japanese society and the practicalities of living in present-day Japan: the way the political structure of the country is organized, education, the environment, the workplace and how people spend their leisure time. The final chapter looks at the country's political, economic and social relations with the wider world, and takes a glance at the future. Each chapter ends with a section entitled 'Taking it Further', where you will find useful addresses, websites, suggested places to visit and things to see and do. Each chapter also contains a list of useful words and phrases which will help you to talk or write about the subject in question. The new edition takes into account any developments in Japanese culture and society which have occurred since first publication.
